Until recently, the Kingdom of Mustang was a prohibited territory, and it was only allowed to tourists in 1991. The old Kingdom of Lo is situated north of the main Himalayan chain, between the snow-capped mountains to the east and west that border Tibet. It forms a reasonably broad and level ridge to the north, with less than 4600m passes. The temperature and land are dry, making it a one-of-a-kind high-altitude desert. It is the route where you will most certainly come across critical historical landmarks, including an 800-year-old cave and religious cravings that you just found. You’ll also stop at several historic caverns along with the way, including Upper Mustang Yoga Trek.
The route includes high peaks, mountains, glaciers, and alpine valleys. Years of isolation have preserved this region’s culture, lifestyle, and traditions unaltered for centuries and to this day. Mustang houses are typically composed of stone and sun-baked mud bricks. The city wall and the four-story palace at Lo-Manthang are two of the Mustang region’s most critical ancient attractions. Tiji Festival, held annually around May in the walled city of Lo Manthang, is one of Upper Mustang’s most prominent and colourful celebrations.
It’s an old legend about chasing demons out of the sacred area of Lo Manthang. Mustang’s dry season comes to a close with the festival. Devotees from all across Mustang congregate, and Buddhist monks execute centuries-old sacred ceremonies. Lama performs many sacred dances while dressed in colourful clothes and masks. Everything takes place in the courtyard of the King’s palace. The myth depicts the conflict between a divinity named Dorje Jono and his evil father.
The Mustang people have their style of life, which many outsiders find odd. All of the brothers in the family are married to a single girl, a practice known as polyandry. The Mustangs are known as Lobas, and their King or tribe leader is Jigme PalbarBista. After Nepal was declared a republic in 2007, the Nepalese government rescinded the Bista’s designation as Mustang King. However, the people of that country still see him as their King. Mustang is a vital salt trading hub in the Trans Himalayan region. As a result, it has seen its fair share of yak caravans and traders.
When you arrive at Kathmandu International Airport, you will be greeted by a representative from Rugged Trails Nepal, who will transport you to your hotel. Arrival refreshments at the hotel, free time until 6 p.m. Welcome meal and travel briefing in the evening.
Drive to Pokhara after breakfast. A scenic drive through the valley, a glimpse of the mountains, and a river with beautiful green scenery brings you to the Pokhara. Check in to the hotel and take a tour around Fewa Lake.
Fly to Jomsom first thing in the morning. After a short tea break, we will meet our porter team at Jomsom and trek to Kagbeni.
The scenery will change daily, and each section of the walk is unique and beautiful in its own right.
From Chele, we begin our journey to Syangboche. The tranquil and picturesque terrain leads to Syanboche, with spectacular mountain views and settlements, and the caves are the day’s main attraction.
The historic road from Syangboche to Ghami includes Tamagaon, Ghiling, Chhunggar, and Jhaite hamlet. Nyi La is the ideal vantage point for seeing Himalayan peaks such as Annapurna and Dhaulagiri and barley and buckwheat fields in Mustang’s arid desert area.
As we approach Lo-manthang, we will sense the land’s deep spirituality. Mountain View will include Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Tuckhe, and Thorong peaks. Tsarang monastery is a well-known monastery in Mustang affiliated with the Gelup sect of Buddhism.
The Upper Mustang Trek’s eventual goal is L Manthang, and we’ll begin our journey today after breakfast. The routes are typically easy, slightly ascending somewhere but remaining reasonably flat. Along the trip, the region of Lo offers isolation, natural beauty, adventure, and cultures. The old Tibetan culture and people’s way of life are one-of-a-kind experiences. We will see the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountains, which are above 8000 meters high.
Today is an exciting day with lots of things to see and do. Breakfast at the lodge kicks off our day. First, we’ll go to the Chooser Cave, and then we’ll ride a horse or a jeep from the lo manthang. Horseback riding is exciting, but we will arrange it based on interest and preferences. Many centuries-old caverns in the granite cliff surround the chooser area. We will go to the caves of Jhong, Konchok Ling, and Ritseling. Before returning to Lo Manthang to tour the historic monasteries. We will visit Chortens, the Royal Palace, three old monasteries, and the local people’s unique way of life in the afternoon.
Today we’ll go to Dhakmar, an important place in this area. We will visit the ancient Ghar Gumba, created in the 8th century by the Tibetan magician master Padmasambhava, and is associated with the Nyingma branch of Buddhism. We’ll witness snow-capped mountains, Tibetan art, chorten, historic villages, caves, Buddhist monasteries, and breathtaking scenery along the trip.
The Ghiling journey is fascinating and adventurous since it leads travellers to the mysterious Buddhist Kingdom of Mustang. We will see Upper Mustang’s longest Mani Wall and the historic Chortens.
Today, we’ll visit the old Cave in Samar village. We’ll pass through the Ranchung monastery cave, chhyungkar chorten, along the route. Inside the Chungsi cave, we shall see stone-carved statues of numerous deities and a figure of Padmasambhava. The old Upper Mustang trail is almost as close to leaving the restricted zone, and we will leave the restricted area the next day.
After breakfast, take a 3-hour climb to Kagbeni, fill out the checkpoint paperwork, and drive to Muktinath Temple. We should visit Muktinath.
After morning activities, drive to the Kali Gandaki River and spend 1-2 hours hunting for fossils in the river. Visit Dumba Lakes and Snow Leopard Cave on your way back to Jomsom. Evening free time on the last day of the Mustang.
In Pokhara, you have free time to explore and relax.
